It is May 11th and this date should be considered an international holiday in honor of American Poet Michael Heller. Born in 1937, he has produced a remarkable body of work that is constantly transforming and inspiring. Not content to join any particular schools, sects, coteries, or collectives-- how could an artist who espouses a poetics of uncertainty join any group?-- he nevertheless helps foster intergenerational poetic community. He has left a lasting mark as a courageous creative example to his contemporaries and many younger poets alike.
Last year, I feted Michael with 80 Birthday Theses for a milestone birthday celebration at POETS HOUSE. The picture below shows this Curley offering his birthday benedictions. You can read them here: https://www.dispatchespoetrywars.com/dispatches/2017/05/michael-heller-celebrated-2/
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MIKE!
